I was thinking that what is most prominent in our time is time itself// We seem to be running after it or else IT runs after us.

In “Thoughts of Our Time” I used the string pizzicato to give the listener the feeling of a ticking clock, and the heavy movement of the arco strings to remind us of the heavy hand of a wall clock – like a pendulum.

I chose the bassoon as the solo instrument for the flow of time because it is heavy low//

“Afterthought” – short, like an afterthought – stands by itself – no relation to time and pulse – the bassoon is climbing up as high as it can, as if it, together with the strings, are trying to get away from the discipline of time itself//
